History Field Trip to Little India and Malayu Heritage Centre (24 Feb 2011)
By Head of Humanities Faculty Mr. Samuel Lim and Ms. Liteno Lotha
The Faculty of Humanities organized a History fieldtrip for the Secondary One students on 24 February 2011. They visited Little India and the Malay Heritage Centre. The trip was intended to acquaint the students with the diverse cultures of Singapore and the early history of Singapore.
“I think the trip was fun and awesome! I have learnt a lot of things from this trip. I have learnt how the Indians celebrate their festive and their interesting culture. I even eat the Indian desert, jelabi. It is a orange flavoured sugar sweet which most Indians eat after their meal. Our guide Aunty Magdeline told us about the Indian God and goddess. I think she is a good guide! “ - Lao Ting Hao 1I
“This History field-trip is very interesting as it tells us about Singapore’s Immigrants. We went to Little India and Kampong Glam. I liked the history fieldtrip because it is very educational.” - Marcus Kee 1E
I think that the Field Trip to Little India and Malay Heritage Centre was an interesting and fulfilling experience. This field trip was not just any ordinary tour but an experience of its own, we are not just learning by listening, but also by interacting with objects that represent the Indians and Malays. We learn about the kings, the houses our ancestors lived. We even learned that the Indians were really the first to set foot in Chinatown. I remember the Indian temples well. I have learnt that the odd colors Red and White represent life and death to Indians. Interestingly, the Indians liked odd numbers while the Chinese prefer even numbers and much more. I also found their culture very interesting, like their jewellery and how the sari was one –size- fits all. I all, this trip was a wonderful and educational experience. I will never forget all the things I have learnt from this journey.
