Globalisation through food (6 Jul 2011)
On 6 July 2011, both Preparatory Courses (Upper Sec and Lower Sec) had a wonderful day out on a learning journey with the theme, “Globalisation through food.” We had a great time out and by the time we returned to school, we were exhausted to the bone. We went to many places and participated in a myriad of activities.
Firstly, we went to Pizza Hut outlet at Hougang Mall. One of the waitresses, Lila, showed us how pizzas are made. We learnt that pizza ingredients are important as it is what makes it delicious. She then showed us the kitchen but we could not take photographs in it. What a pity! The kitchen was not a large one but there were a lot of machines in it and a lot of refrigerators. The materials needed to stay in a cold environment. There were lots of ingredients, to be mixed together. The pizza would be really delicious after roasted. We also had lunch there. The pizzas were very delicious and the smells made my stomach rumble with hunger. The bread in the pizza was a little dry but the fizzy coke satisified my thirst. We all felt so good there.
After that we went to a Taiwanese snack house in. We thought that the layout was very simple. There were only some shelves and tables. The snacks were on the tables. We bought some snacks. However, the snacks were very good and delicious. If we could go there again, we would buy many snacks.
The last place we went to was to the Salmon factory. It was too crowded there. There were many people working in there. Some workers were searching for fish bones and pulled them out. Some people stirred the soup. Some people packed the fish. The fishy smell permeated the air. I tasted a slice of the fresh salmon sashimi. It was delicious.
One of our classmates, Michael, tried to pull the fish bones out from one fish but he did a really terrible job and made a lot of holes in the fish. Then the fish meat was cut into very thin meat and smeared with special seasoning. We tasted that and it was the most delicious and freshest fish meat I had ever ate. There were two big freezers in the factory. They were really cold and the fish in them were as hard as stone! We entered them only with T-shirts and shorts. All of us were really cold. The glasses of those classmates wearing them fogged up immediately.
All of us felt really happy that day. We bought a lot of delicious snacks. However, Ione of us hate fish and the sashimi was difficult to keep fresh. So some of us did not buy that.
