Foodstuff at Genefest 2011 (26 Jul 2011)

bwd  Set 1/12  fwd

As part of our class project, our science teacher, Mr. Johnson organised a trip on 26 July 2011 for the Secondary one pupils to the Genefest exhibition held at the Singapore Suntec City Convention Hall.  The exhibition was part of the Singapore Science Festival 2011 organised by the Singapore Science Centre.

The theme of this year’s Genefest is on ‘Food’. Through interesting activities, interactive games and exhibits, we learned about the biochemical and molecular aspects of food.  Our learning was reinforced through this little game where each visitor was given a booklet with questions from every exhibition station in the hall.  Our part was to answer all the questions.

One station that was particularly interesting for me was how we can use plants in many ways – certainly something new to me.  We have also learned about how food is preserved which was quite fascinating. There was a documentary on ‘F’mood Science Show’ which tells us that the food we eat can affect our moods.  In fact, our moods can also affect the choice of food we take.  This is because some food can secretly trigger biochemical reactions that will either excite the senses or relax the nerves.

The exhibition was definitely worth visiting.  There was much knowledge to be gained and it really makes Biology come alive for us!

Now I can get back to my project for Mr. Johnson and I am confident that I can put together something excellent.
