Flora and Fauna at HortPark (1 Aug 2011)
The 1st of August 2011 which was last Monday, was a special day for us because we went to the Singapore Horticulture Park (HortPark for short) on a learning journey. The reasons why we went on this learning journey were to find out more about nature and to explore the place.
It was the perfect day to be outdoors. The sun was shining brightly and there was not a single cloud in the sky. We got to the HortPark at nearly 9.30am and went back to school at around 2.45pm. We enjoyed ourselves in the time we spent there.
When we arrived at the park, all of us started taking pictures of the place. Within minutes, we were greeted by a guide, assigned by the management of the park. The guide brought us to the Silver Garden, a famous garden with rare coloured leaves. The interesting thing about the Silver Garden was that the leaves were all in silver, hence the name of the garden. I was amazed by this, as most leaves are usually green. Next, we were brought to the Butterfly enclosure. We saw different species of butterflies. Some of the names of the butterflies were difficult to pronounce such as the Cethosia Cyone/Leopard Locowing, Danaus Genutia/Common Tiger, Hebomola Glauippe/Great Orange Tip, to name a few.
We breathed in the sweet smell of the morning dew and kept walking. Then, we got to the Herbs and Spices garden. The herbs and spices there were useful. The guide showed us some spices like curry and mint. They smelt very nice. Visiting this area of the HortPark was quite interesting. We were all ears and listening attentively when the guide was explaining to us the uses of some plants. However, the sun was scorching hot and within thirty minutes of standing in the HortPark, we were perspiring non-stop. The guide told us that our lunch would be brought there soon. She took us to the playground. At the playground, we used up all our energy dashing about and played to our hearts’ content. When we were tired, we sat on the soft and cushiony grass to relax.
From this learning journey, I had learnt a lot of things. The most important thing that we have come to know, is about the flora and fauna. We must also respect both these elements as they too are living things. We must protect our environment fiercely. This learning journey was an eye opener to me and my classmates.
