Learning Journey to the Singapore Zoological Gardens (25 May 2011)
On the 25th of May 2011, the Prep Course students were brought on a tour of the Singapore Zoological Gardens by our teacher Ms. Joanne Tan. It was a memorable experience for me.
First, we watched a show about the sea lions. The show was fantastic as it showed the capabilities of sea lions. I was really amazed by the aptitude of this particular animal as I would never have thought a sea lion would be able to balance a ball on its nose. Their intelligence in being able to understand their trainers' instructions were incredible.
Next, we went around in groups to look for particular animals in the zoo. The animal which was assigned to our group was the White Tiger. When we reached the White Tiger's enclosure, we took pictures and read the details and information regarding the White Tiger as we needed to give a presentation on it to the class. The weather was not in our favour as it was drizzling and we were outdoors. However it did not dampen our enthusiasm in looking out for the various animals one bit. Soon, the rain went away. One of the members in the group wasn't feeling well at that time so we decided as a group, to sit in a restaurant to let her rest so that we could rest too. By the time we noticed the time, it was already 11 am, time for lunch.
By 12:30pm, we were all assembled at the amphitheatre to catch another animal show. Our group reached the meeting point before the assigned time and with time on our hands, we dropped in the souvenir shop and saw interesting items like a tiger claw (fake one of course). Later at the animal show, we were entertained by a short skit, an aboriginal dance of sorts and also many types of rainforest animals like monkeys and birds.
After the show, we continued exploring the zoo and we got to see the enclosure called "Wild Africa" which houses many types of tropical snakes and reptiles.
During our group presentation back in school the next day, all of us learnt more about the African Penguin, Komodo Dragon, Elephant, Emu and Giraffe. As for me, I learnt that we must help to prevent the extinction of of animals or else, we would not be able to learn more about them in future.
